I Turned 38 and Feel Fulfilled: A Journey Towards Sufficiency

A couple of months ago, I turned 38. Unlike previous celebrations, at this particular stage in my life, I feel happy and fulfilled. Reaching this point has taken time and, of course, a lot of work.

You might be wondering, “Reaching this point? How so?” Well, yes, happy, lighter, warmer, and kinder to myself. Not choosing happiness for the sake of choosing it, but truly feeling it. My adolescence was quite peaceful, a constant search for balance between family, friends, and school, with some ups and downs, but nothing out of the ordinary.

My twenties, on the other hand, were a constant battle to achieve the “perfect weight,” always looking impeccable, fighting in vain against gray hairs, fulfilling my self-imposed checklist in terms of education and work, and maintaining a “successful” married life.

Having surpassed the thirties and believing I had everything “under control” (a great lesson: we control nothing), the dreaded divorce came. With it, the firm conviction arose to focus on myself and work on any necessary aspect to rise from that situation and create a better and more abundant future.

Despite this belief, I had no idea what I was facing. It took nearly two years of intense EMDR therapy. Initially, the goal was to desensitize many events from my childhood that were the source of my stress and irrational fears. Subsequently, I worked on repetitive patterns that brought nothing positive to my life. The most important and key part of this process was that this therapy helped me understand and make peace with my parents and my childhood.

After this therapy and with less emotional weight, I began incorporating other techniques and tools that have helped me find balance and feel sufficient, something I try to remind myself of daily. Losing weight, fitting into the concept of “perfection,” accumulating diplomas, or counting wedding anniversaries did not make me sufficient. Just by being myself, I was already unique and, of course, more than sufficient.

    ¡Ring Ring!

“There is no evil that lasts 100 years, nor body that can endure it.” Cling to all the beautiful things around you; from personal experience, there is much to be thankful for. Be grateful every day for everything that comes to mind; nothing is too small. Find a sport that excites you, nurture your mind, and if you can, go to therapy. When we make ourselves a priority, everything else falls into place.
