And how much water do you consume?

As I share with you on my About page of this blog, I am looking for a lifestyle of health and beauty. The last three years of my life revolved 100% around work, and as a result I was leaving aside my physical care, sharing time with my family and friends, and enjoying the activities and hobbies that really fascinate me.  However, I am one of those who believes that life sometimes calls upon you to pause and get back on track … and it happened to me: my warning signal, excess weight and severe swelling of my feet due to fluids retention because of a poor diet.

With the help of my family, a complete medical check-up and a food advisor, I started this journey to change my habits about a year ago. Although I am still not there 100% – and there is still a long way to go – I want to share with you one of the many lessons I’ve learned during this journey.

I was convinced that I consumed the right amount of daily water (maximum four glasses); however, Andrés – my advisor – not only invited me but challenged me to increase my daily dosage. Today, I consume approximately two liters throughout the day.

The benefits have been GREAT!

My body stays hydrated and functions correctly.

Every day, first thing and without any difficulty, my body eliminates the retained liquids and toxins; helping my liver.

My body is no longer permanently hungry and anxious; which resulted in eating less junk food during the day.

It has helped me to eliminate accumulated fats, decreasing the concentration of cellulite in certain areas of my body.

The skin on my face looks better because it is hydrated.

I am having a better physical performance.

Now, getting to this point and increasing my daily water intake has not been easy.  I must be honest and confess that during the process I’ve had some hard days when I did not even want to look at a glass of water … I felt saturated and tired.  Anyway, giving up was not an option for me and I wanted to achieve my purpose in a healthy way (get the right amount, like I do today) and make a habit of this.  The following have helped me along in my most difficult days:

Water with lemon and ginger: in a liter of cold water you add a centimeter of ginger (grated or thin slices) and a sliced lemon, let it sit for ten minutes before consuming.

Benefits: lemon is a citrus fruit with a high intake of vitamin C and limonene (considered to inhibit breast cancer); it also has an important detoxifying effect, improves metabolism and relieves digestive difficulties.  Ginger has antibacterial properties, so it helps to keep the intestinal flora in balance and to absorb nutrients from food.

Water with cucumber and peppermint: in a a liter of water add a large fist of peppermint and a large cucumber cut into thin slices; let it sit in the refrigerator for a couple of hours so that the water absorbs the flavors.

Benefits: cucumber is a vegetable with diuretic effects and contains moderate sources of vitamin A, iron and potassium.  Also, it is rich in water and contains sterols, which can help the heart by lowering cholesterol.  Peppermint is an antispasmodic, digestive tonic, peripheral vasodilator and promotes bile flow.  Do not use it if you are pregnant and do not give to children.

Jamaican flower water: boil two tablespoons of dried Jamaica flowers in one liter of water for 5 to 10 minutes, until the water turns red, strain and let it rest and cool to put in the fridge.

Benefits: jamaica flower is a natural diuretic that helps lower cholesterol levels; It is an excellent supplement for a diet and to have an adequate and healthy weight.  In addition, it helps normalize blood pressure, has a high content of vitamin C and helps clean and eliminate excess water in the body.
